A heat pump uses technology similar to that found in a refridgerator. It extracts heat from a source, such as the surrounding air. It then amplifies and transfers that heat to where it is needed. These units can heat or cool an area as required by reversing that heat flow.

Heat Pumps can start from around $2,500 including installation and GST for the very smallest Hi-Wall units. Depending on what type of installation that you require, will play a part in determining the cost. As an example a whole home ducted system could be between $10,000 & $16,000 depending on the size of the system and the size of the house. A split system works best for people who want to heat or cool individual rooms in their home. The split system is also a good choice when you have a smaller budget because it is the most cost effective solution of the two systems. The ducted heating system is more suited to people who want to heat or cool their entire home at once.

To achieve an optimal balance between performanace and energy usage, we recommend that you set your heat pump temperature between 18 - 21 degrees (heating) in winter and 23 - 26 degrees (cooling) in summer. The world health organisation recommends a minimum indoor temperature of 18 degrees, or 20 degrees with young children, elderly people or ill people.

It is recommended that you have your heat pump professionally serviced every 12 months, ideally before the start of winter, to ensure your unit is working optimally.

Filters should be checked and cleaned regulary by the home owner to keep the heat pump working efficently between services. The exterior of the indoor and outdoor compressor unit should be kept clean and free of debris or anything else that might block the air flow. In addition to this we recommend you engage an expert to service your heat pump every 12 months for optimal performance.

Like any modern appliances the life span can vary but 10-15 years is quite typical in NZ. Efficiency and performance often decline with age so it may be time to consider replacement if your unit is reaching this threshold.
