Wood Burner FAQs

A common cause of this is that you are burning the wrong fuel. When it comes to firewood, you should only ever use fuel with a moisture content of 20% or less. This is because wood with a high moisture content creates more smoke as it burns away the water still inside.

The general consensus is that you should sweep your chimney at least once a year. However, if you use your fireplace a lot you may need to do it more often than that. Sweeping your chimney is important because it helps remove soot and more importantly removes the build-up of creosote in the chimney.

Wood burner-use rules for sites that are less than 2ha in size (generally urban areas):

  • Ultra-low emission burners are allowed into all homes
  • Installation of low-emission burners is not allowed
  • Use of existing low-emission burners is allowed for up to 20 years from installation
  • Use of open fires or older style burners is not allowed

Wood burner-use rules for sites that are greater than 2ha in size (generally rural areas):

  • Ultra-low emission burners and low emission burners are allowed into all homes
  • Older style burners can be used, but cannot be installed
  • Open fires installed from 2013 onwards cannot be used

Yes. The appliance will need to be recertified by the manufacturer or an approved heating engineer to show that it is in good condition and complies with Environment Canterbury’s emission requirements. This report must be provided with your building consent application and include the age of the burner; anticipated life expectancy; and the condition of the fire box, door and other parts. A new flue will also need to be installed.

Yes, you need a building consent to install or move solid and liquid space heaters, such as wood, pellet or diesel burners.
